The Hypsignathus monstrosus is the scientific name of your usual domesticated gothic cathedral gargoyle. Okay, it’s not but that’s exactly what this bat looks like. It’s most commonly known as the Hammerhead bat, one of the largest bats in Africa. If the Europeans saw this as inspiration for their church sculptures, we won’t be surprised.
